Certificate of Secondary
Education
The GCSE is a single examination
like its predecessors. It was introduced with a view to raising
standards of performance and is designed to assess and reward
positive achievement.
The International GCSE (IGCSE)
was developed by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations
syndicate (UCLES) as an international version of GCSE. All sylabuses
are designed to meet international needs while being based on
the GCSE national critaria.
The IGCSE is a two year curriculum
programme with a choice of core and Extended level curriculum.
The examination has seven point scal A-G. Grade A indicates the
highest level of achievement and grade G minimum satisfactory
performance. The examination is taken at 16 years of age.
IGCSE syllabuses cover six
subject groups, Languages, Humanities and Social sciences, sciences,
Mathematics, Creative Arts and technology, and Natural Economy.
The IGCSE has gained international credibility as an educational
qualification and has accepted as a preliminary requirement for
entry to most UK universities and institutes of higher education.
In addition to the IGCSE, UCLES have recently introduced the
Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE).
Advanced Level (A level)
GCE A level examinations are
normally taken follwoing the GCSE and after two years of study,
either in the sixth form of secondary schools, sixth form teriary
colleges or in colleges of further education. A level and AS
(Advanced Supplementary) examinations are set by the five GCE
Examining groups and Boards. You can study London Examinations
AS and A Levels at schools and colleges in more than 100 countries
- ask your local British Council office for delails of the one
nearest to you.
Traditionally students followed
courses in two or thee related subjects, for example the Sciences
or the Humanities. However with the introduction of less conventional
higher education courses, less traditional combinations of A
Level are now more common.
AS Advanced Supplementary
(AS ) Level
As qualifications were introduced in 1987 and exam taken in 1989
with the purpose of broadening sixth form studies beyond the
traditional clusters of science or arts subjects. The AS qualification
is designed to occupy half the teaching and study time an A-Level,
but it is set to the same standard and was deemed as a two year
course. Like A Level , it is graded A to E, with grade standards
related to the corresponding A Level grade. The syllabuses take
account of the shorter teaching and study time available so that
while the quantity of work is less, the quality is the same as
that required for the equivalent A-level grade. Two AS qualifications
can therefore be regraded as the equivalent of one A level and
are generally accepted in place of one A level for university
entrance. |

General National Vocational Qualification
- GNVQ
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, GNVQ offer students over
the age of 16 a new alternative to traditional GCE A Level and
GCSEs. GNVQs provide a broad base of vocationally relevant knowledge
and skills in preparation either for entry into work or for progression
into higher education. They are mostly taken by students over
the age of 16 but a growing number of 14 to 16 year olds are
studying GNVQs or, more commonly, units from a GNVQ.
GNVQ Levels:
Foundation - equivalent to four GCSEs at grades D-G, and normally
taken after one year's full time study
Intermediate - equivalent to four GCSEs at grades A-C, and normally
taken after one year's full time study.
Advanced - vocational A levels are equivalent to two GCE A levels,
and normally taken after two years full time study
A student may take a full GNVQ along with other qualifications
such as a GCE A level, AS courses, a couple of GCSEs or additional
GNVQ or NVQ units.
All GNVQs include three compulsory key
skill units which are common to all GNVQs at the same level,
irrespective of the vocational area. These compulsory key skills
are Communication, Application of Number, and Information Technology,
with units in Improving own Learning and Performance, and Working
with others also being developed.
GNVQs are accredited in England and wales by the Qualifications
and Curriculum Authority (QCA). In Northern Ireland by the Northern
Ireland Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment,
and awarded by the Edexcel Foundation, City & Guilds.
For 14 to 16 year olds, a new qualification has been developed
- the Part One GNVQ - which is equivalent to half a full GNVQ.
Part One GNVQs at Foundation and Intermediate levels in Business,
Health and Social care, manufacturing, Art and design, Information
Technology, Leisure and Tourism and Engineering are currently
for use on a basis in selected schools.
