To
be eligible for the award of the Dioploma of Member , aa candidates
must:
possess a primary medical qualification
have satisfactory completed 24
months of mandatory clinical training and the mandatory Basic
surgical Skills course at IUFS
hold an authenticated logbook
of training
provide three satisfactory assessments
of their performance of approved basic surgical training posts
(at IUFS)
have passed all sections of MRCS
Diploma Examination
have been engaged in acquiring
professional knowledge and training for at least 36 months (IUFS
certificate)
As
agrees by the surgical Royal Colleges, in order to fulfil the
requirements for the complection of basic surgical training,
a minimum of two years of clinical trainings.
In first year:
six months in general surgery with
emergency work
six months in trauma and othopaedics
with musculo-skletal trauma or
six months in accident and emergency
medicine.
In second year:
Cardiothoracic surgery
Neurosurgery
oral and maxillofacial surgery
otolaryngology
paediatric surgery
plastic surgery, or
urology
or
gynaecology
ophthalmology: or
three or four months of intensive
therapy

Part 1 and Part 2 Written Examinations Introduction of new format
in 2002

Policy Committee on behalf of the Federation of Royal Colleges
of Physicians of the United KingdomFollowing an extensive review
of the current MRCP(UK) Examination, the Federation of Royal
Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom has accepted the
recommendation of the MRCP(UK) Policy Committee, namely, that
changes be made to the existing MRCP(UK) Part 1 and Part 2 Written
Examinations.
These changes reflect
the progress of medical knowledge and are introduced so that
physicians in training are encouraged to develop their full clinical
and professional potential.
MRCP(UK) Part 1
Examination
The MRCP(UK) Part
1 Examination scheduled for 21 May 2002 will be the first Examination
in the new format. The Examination will consist of two papers,
each of two and a half hours' duration. There will be a break
for lunch between the two papers so that the overall examining
time will be six hours.
It is proposed
that in the UK Paper 1 will be sat between 10.00am and 12.30pm
and Paper 2 between 1.30pm and 4.00pm. · The first paper
will consist of 60 multiple true/false questions with 300 individual
items (similar to the current MRCP(UK) Part 1 Examination).·
The MRCP(UK) Part
2 Written Examination will be criterion referenced from 2002/3
with the introduction of a pre-determined pass mark. Candidates
will score marks only for each correct answer recorded. A full
explanation will be provided early in 2002 and will also be detailed
in the 2002 edition of the MRCP(UK) Regulations.·
The application
process for both Examinations will remain the same. The current
one paper format and assessment regulations for each Examination
will not change for the sittings scheduled on the following dates:
25 September 2001 (Part 1); 14 November 2001 (Part 2 Written);
29 January 2002 (Part 1); 12 March 2002 (Part 2). Full details
of the changes will be set out in the 2002 edition of the MRCP(UK)
Regulations and published on the MRCP(UK) .
The Question Paper (time
allowed: 2.5 hours)
a. The MRCP(UK) Part 1 Examination may be taken in General Medicine
only.
i. The MRCP(UK) Part 1 Examination is designed to assess a candidate's
knowledge and understanding both of the clinical sciences relevant
to medical practice and of the common or important disorders,
to a level appropriate for entry to specialist training.
ii. As a general guide candidates will wish to know that there
are some 14 clinical science questions in the MRCP(UK) Part 1
Examination and these are made up as follows:
Cell, molecular and membrane biology 2-3
Anatomy 2
Physiology, biochemistry and metabolism 5-6
Immunology 2-3
Genetics 1-2
Statistics, epidemiology and evidence-based medicine 1
In addition, questions are set on common or important clinical
disorders as follows:
Cardiology 4
Clinical hematology 4
Clinical pharmacology, therapeutics and toxicology 6
Dermatology 1
Endocrinology 4
Gastroenterology 4
Infectious diseases and tropical medicine 4
Nephrology 4
Neurology 4
Ophthalmology 0-1
Psychiatry 4
Respiratory medicine 4
Rheumatology 2
Sexually transmitted diseases 0-1

Potential MRCP (UK) Clinical Examiners for PACES (Practical Assessment
of Clinical Examination Skills) In June 2001 the Royal Colleges
of Physicians introduced a new style clinical examination - PACES
(Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills).
